Devastated over his latest break-up, Jason hides out in his apartment while the take-out boxes and empty chip bags pile up around him. When Bea stops by to cheer him up, they embark on an afternoon of board games, psychoanalysis, Star Wars references, and cockroach eviction, and Jason learns the value of a good friend and a well-placed lava pit.
A witty, surprisingly touching look at love, relationships, and what it means to be complete.
Not A Love Story edition by TJ Baer Literature Fiction eBooks
The story here is simple: guy suffers break-up, best friend comes along to cheer him up, makes him realize there's far more to life than wallowing in despair, and everyone goes home happy (or happier, at least). What sets this story apart is the author's unique ability of crafting really lovely, sometimes poetic prose around these common themes that we may have seen and maybe even experienced in our own lives before, and breathing new life into them. The characters are vivid and true to life, and most importantly, easy to connect with - you truly feel the grief and devastation of Jason's breakup here, but perhaps more importantly, you also connect with his eventual realization that sometimes, grief isn't just about what you've lost - it's about what you've found, and what you've learned about yourself in the process. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to discover a new author with a fresh voice - you will not be disappointed!

Not A Love Story edition by TJ Baer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I quite liked this. Perfect for reading on a long commute into work (or home from) when you're feeling kinda crappy yourself and would rather like someone like Bea to come into your mind and help sort out your problems. I like the fact that the story quickly dismisses the regular role that Bea would play as the female best friend, and it stays that way. It feels much more realistic and relatable.
The story bumps around much like you would expect the train of thought of a young man who had just had his heart broken would. It's easy to follow along with. All in all, a really nicely done story.
"Not A Love Story" is a charming, touching short story that will appeal to anyone who has gone through a rough break-up. It paints a realistic picture of post-break-up depression and the stages of accepting the end of something that you believe made you complete. The main character, Jason, is lonely and devastated and can't see how his life can be whole again. He doesn't leave the house for days, until his best friend, Bea, invades and forces him to get himself back together. She does this firmly but kindly, with the quick wit and banter characteristic of T.J. Baer's stories and novels.
The message of the story is uplifting and true. Sometimes things we think are perfect don't last. Sometimes we lie to ourselves, and sometimes we find ourselves in a rut leading nowhere. But as long as we search our own souls for the truth and are honest in our pursuit of happiness, we can achieve it--and as long as we have friends, we will never be alone.
This short, touching novella from new-ish author T. J. Baer is a wonderful look into an emotion that most of us are _very_ familiar with dealing with a breakup that we never saw coming.
The dialogue is very natural and witty, filled with science-fiction and nerd-culture references. It's clear that Miss Baer is current and well-informed, and she works that in subtle ways into her writing. It's refreshing reading a self-published novella that is as well-written as this! In a world of shoddy, piecemeal self-published fiction, Baer's work really shines above the crowd.
I highly recommend that you give this story a chance if you are looking for a simple story that nonetheless reads absolutely beautifully. You won't be disappointed, and may turn out to be a fan for life!
